My works often feature subtle perceptual shifts in light installations, paintings, and materials. They explore the cultural meanings embedded in matter and the experiential qualities of site, language, and space. Positioned in an off-kilter fashion, these formal reference points display contrasting positions, disrupting architectural spaces and blending conventional gallery settings with ephemeral elements. This disruption creates atmospheric shifts, inviting viewers to reconsider the effects of light, time, and sound. Working across media and medium, from painting to light works and sound, this is all presented and situated within spatial installations that react to the minimal rendering of space and to that of the object, presenting minimal works with maximal energy.
In 2023 Giles Ryder was invited as artist-in-residence at the Jim Thompson Farm, Thailand with the commissioning of large multi-site neon installations. In 2019, he received a production residency and exhibition at Canberra Glassworks. In 2015, he was awarded an Asialink Arts Residency to undertake a studio-based residency at Ne’Na Contemporary Artspace in Chiang Mai. In 2011, he was selected as an Asian Pacific Artist Fellow, at The MMCA Residency, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea. In 2008 he was a recipient of the Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship to undertake postgraduate studies at KH-B, Berlin. He has exhibited extensively, internationally and nationally.
